Vol. 354 No. 12

Written Answers. - Passport Applications.

524.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the reason it is necessary to seek detailed and intimate information about family and domestic matters from applicants for passports.

I do not agree that detailed and intimate information is sought from passport applicants. The Passport Office seeks to obtain only the information necessary to satisfy itself that the applications are genuinely based, for example, in regard to identity and citizenship. The detail asked for is no greater than in other countries and conforms to the requirements of the common passport now agreed for member states of the European Community and has indeed been reduced in recent years.
