Vol. 354 No. 12

Written Answers. - Shannon Airport Facilities.

78.

asked the Minister for Communications if he will make a statement on the present position regarding the provisions of US customs pre-clearance facilities at Shannon.

My Department is actively engaged in pursuing the possibilities of having US Customs/Immigration pre-clearance facilities located at Shannon. As I indicated in reply to a parliamentary question on 5 June 1984, the question of introducing such facilities at Shannon was the subject of a meeting between United States and Irish delegations in Washington on 17-18 April 1984. It was envisaged at that time that further contacts between the United States and Irish authorities would take place at the end of the 1984 summer season. These contacts are being pursued. Pending the outcome of these contacts, it is not possible to assess the prospects for the establishment of pre-clearance facilities at Shannon.
