Vol. 356 No. 1

Written Answers. - Audio-Visual Aids.

593.

asked the Minister for Education if she is aware that her Department does not regard computer-assisted learning programmes on cassette and disc as a legitimate audio-visual aid on the same terms as other audio-visual aids; if she considers that this is a proper attitude for her Department to take in an increasingly technological era; and if she proposes to have those programmes listed as being eligible for audio-visual grants.

There is at present no general scheme of grants for primary schools to assist them purchase computer hardware or software. The audio-visual aids scheme is designed to assist school authorities purchase specific audio-visual equipment and appropriate software for that equipment. It is not proposed at present to amend this scheme to include computer software.

My Department are reviewing at present the scheme of grants for the provision of science and other equipment for secondary schools. In the course of that review consideration will be given to the need for schools to acquire good quality educational courseware including computer software on discs and cassette tapes. A decision in this matter will be taken as soon as possible.
