The estimated numbers of cattle hides cured and sold as such, by the tanning industry in the years 1982, 1983 and 1984 (January-September) were as follows: 1982, 703, 200; 1983, 744, 400; 1984 Jan-Sept, 517, 600. Information on value is not available. These estimates exclude (a) hides cured and further processed into leather by the same firm and (b) hides cured by establishments not in the tanning industry.
Does the Minister think that the House and the country are properly served by a statistics office which can produce accurate figures for cattle hides but which must rely on best estimates in terms of people?
