Vol. 357 No. 8

Written Answers. - Prohibition of Fishing on River Feale.

549.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry when he received submissions from Shannon Regional Fisheries Board with regard to the introduction of a by-law to prohibit fishing 60 metres below Scartleigh Dam and 40 metres upstream from the same dam on the River Feale; when a decision will be made by him on this issue having regard to the fact that statistics will show that fish were unable to go upstream from this dam on the River Feale last year.

The Shannon Regional Board proposed in a letter dated 15 February 1985 that fishing be prohibited 60 metres upstream and 40 metres downstream of the dam at Scartleigh.

The introduction of a prohibition on fishing 100 yards upstream and downstream of the dam was previously under consideration.

The Shannon Regional Board's proposals and alternatives which have been put forward by other interested parties are being actively examined and I hope to make a decision on the matter shortly.
