Vol. 357 No. 10
asked the Minister for Justice the number of hours of overtime worked by the Garda in 1982, 1983 and 1984 in each division.
720.
asked the Minister for Justice the number of hours worked by Garda in 1982, 1983 and 1984 in each district of the Dublin Metropolitan area.
Limerick East): I propose to take Questions Nos. 719 and 720 together.
The particulars sought in the question, in so far as they are available, are given in the following table.
The figures for overtime do not take account of the many developments that have occurred in improving the effectiveness of the force e.g. in relation to equipment, new technology, new rostering systems etc. Moreover, since the Government assumed office, the strength of the force has been increased by about 750 members. Accordingly, while the number of hours overtime worked has decreased, it does not follow that there has been any reduction in the effective level of policing — and I do not accept that this is the case.
As regards Question No. 720, the Garda authorities report that records of the total number of hours worked by members of the force are only available in respect of each division of the Dublin Metropolitan area and that to calculate the hours worked at district level would involve diverting Garda manpower from other more pressing duties.
