Vol. 358 No. 8

Written Answers. - Road Improvement Projects.

574.

asked the Minister for the Environment the major primary road improvement works that have already started since 1 January 1985; and the projects listed in the Government's roads programme that will commence before 31 December 1985.

584.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will give details of new major road improvement projects which will commence in 1985.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 574 and 584 together. It is estimated that £72 million will be spent in 1985 on major road improvement schemes throughout the country. This includes expenditure on work in progress on schemes started before 1985 and on schemes starting this year.

In the new road plan, the following major road improvement projects are scheduled to commence in 1985: N4 Chapelizod By-Pass (Dublin); N4 Lucan By-Pass (Dublin); N6 Oranmore By-Pass (Galway); N11 Newtownmountkennedy By-Pass (Wicklow); N11 Brownswood/Edermine (Wexford); N13 Port Road/Manorcunningham (Donegal); Southern Ring Road (Cork); Blackrock By-Pass (Dublin); Inner Relief Road (Kilkenny).

In January last, the Department made grant commitments in respect of all the schemes scheduled to start this year. Work on three of these projects viz., Oranmore By-Pass, Brownswood/ Edermine and Southern Ring Road (Cork), has already commenced. The timing of the commencement of the balance of the projects is primarily a matter for the local authorities concerned subject to the completion of relevant statutory procedures.
