Vol. 358 No. 9

Written Answers. - Rockall Island.

337.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he is aware that a planning application for development on Rockall island has been lodged with a British local authority; the steps he proposes to take to object to this application; and if he will advise that the relevant local authority for such application is Donegal County Council.

I am aware from newspaper reports that a former paratrooper apparently intends to spend six months on Rockall and has applied for planning permission to erect a shelter on the rock. Since activity of this nature cannot affect our rejection of the British claim to sovereignty over Rockall and has no significance at international law in relation to the status of a rock, I do not propose to take any action in relation thereto.
