The national primary and secondary road system is now generally regarded as established, having been formally declared in 1977 following a long process of evaluation and consultation. Kerry County Council requested that the Tralee-Dingle road, which is known as regional road R.559, be upgraded to national secondary status. This request has been examined and it is considered that, having regard to all the criteria used to designate national roads, reclassification is not warranted.
