Vol. 359 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Transport Costs.

579.

asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the substantial travel costs involved for parents of children from Arranmore Island, County Donegal, who have to travel home each weekend from post-primary schools on the mainland, she will consider subsidising the costs or grant a travel allowance.

Under the terms of the free post-primary education scheme, pupils from Arranmore Island are entitled to boarding grants payable in respect of children from islands or remote areas outside the range of transport to suitable day post-primary schools. The terms of this scheme are of general application and do not provide for the payment of the cost of transport to home and back to school at weekends. I have approved the provision of a post-primary school on Arranmore Island.
