Vol. 359 No. 4

Written Answers. - Development of Disused Areas.

108.

asked the Minister for the Environment his suggestions with regard to the land restoration and reinstatement of disused quarries, sand and gravel pits; and if he will make a statement as to how such disused areas could be made more acceptable environmentally.

Local authorities have powers under various codes which would enable them to secure the development or reinstatement of disused quarries, sand and gravel pits. Planning permission is required in the first instance for development of this nature and it is standard practice, in granting permissions for this type of development, to include conditions requiring appropriate restoration, reinstatment and landscaping following the cessation of quarrying operations. Local authorities also have power under the Planning Acts to engage directly in the development of land; this could include the restoration of former quarries or sand and gravel pits for amenity or other appropriate purposes. The services of An Foras Forbartha, including its conservation and amenity advisory service, are available to planning authorities, for guidance in matters of this nature.
