Vol. 360 No. 3

Written Answers. - Maintenance of National Monuments.

32.

asked the Minister for Finance if he feels it is fair that when a building is designated as a national monument by the Office of Public Works the maintenance and upkeep of the monument remains the responsibility of the person on whose land the monument is sited; and if he agrees that some scheme should be devised whereby the maintenance of national monuments would be the responsibility of the Government.

Generally it is not in the public interest that the State should accept responsibility for the maintenance of private property. From time to time exceptional cases arise where the Commissioners of Public Works deem it necessary to appoint themselves guardians of particular national monuments, as provided by the National Monuments Acts, and to carry out essential maintenance works to them.
