Vol. 361 No. 3

Written Answers. - Social Employment Scheme.

22.

asked the Minister for Labour if he intends to broaden the scope of the social employment scheme to freely allow persons under 25 years of age who are in receipt of unemployment assistance to qualify.

The social employment scheme was developed for the express purpose of enabling the large numbers of productive and energetic persons over 25 years who have been unemployed for a year or more to make a worthwhile contribution to the social development of their community at a reasonable cost to the Exchequer.

Persons under 25 years are catered for by the wide range of other training and employment schemes operated by my Department, the National Manpower Service, AnCO, the Youth Employment Agency and CERT.
