asked the Minister for Labour the number of school leavers in the current year out of work; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The only statistical series focusing on the employment position of school leavers is the annual school leavers' survey carried out by my Department. The survey is carried out in May-June of each year and it examines the career paths of second level school leavers from the previous academic year. The time lapse allows a more settled picture to emerge in relation to school leavers entering into the labour market or continuing in further education. Therefore, the information which the Deputy is seeking in relation to school leavers from the 1984-85 academic year will not be available until the findings of next year's survey are published, towards the end of 1986. The findings of the 1985 survey covering school leavers from the 1983-84 academic year, will be published shortly.

The 1984 school leavers' survey report is the most recent report available and examines the position of school leavers from the 1982-83 academic year. The economic status of the school leavers in May-June 1984 was as follows:
