Vol. 361 No. 8

Written Answers. - Grant Payments.

248.

asked the Minister for Education if a full maintenance grant will be paid to a person (details supplied) in Dublin 4 whose last remaining guardian died in April 1985 leaving him without support to complete his studies.

My Department is at present reconsidering the level of grant applicable to the student in question under the higher education grants scheme in the light of the case recently received from Dublin Corporation for the payment of the maintenance element of the grant in full. A decision will be conveyed to the corporation as quickly as possible.

249.

asked the Minister for Education if any decision has yet been made on the application of a person (details supplied) in County Kilkenny for a higher education grant where the application was made through Kilkenny County Council.

In the case in question it is understood from Kilkenny County Council's office that the reckonable income for the purposes of the means test in the higher education grants scheme for 1985 (i.e. the scheme of the year the student sat for the leaving certificate) is £12,693 and the number of dependent children in the family is three (3). On the basis of those figures the grant payable in accordance with the terms of the scheme is one quarter of the student's lecture fees.
