asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry if he will immediately seek a supplementary quota of mackerel for the remainder of this year from the EC in view of the fact that the present quota is totally inadequate.

It is not possible to obtain an increase in the mackerel quota allocated to Ireland for 1985 other than by way of exchanges of some quota species with other member states or by an increase in the total allowable catch for mackerel which is not justified on scientific grounds. I am at present in contact with some of my colleagues in other member states with a view to securing an increased allocation for this country by way of such exchange.
