Vol. 361 No. 9

Written Answers. - Mayo Pier.

83.

asked the Minister for Fisheries and Forestry when he will give the necessary sanction and approval to major works needed at Ballycastle pier.

I presume the Deputy is referring to Killerduff pier, Ballycastle. A major development scheme for Killerduff has been received from Mayo County Council. The proposal included the extension of the existing breakwater by 25 metres, the extension of the slip, the provision of a boat parking area, the raising of the existing breakwater to provide a stormwall and the raising of the seawall.

Because of the low level of fishing activity from Killerduff the cost of the total scheme which is substantial could not be justified on economic grounds. However, my Department is prepared to grant aid works excluding the extension of the breakwater and has accordingly offered a grant to Mayo County Council. The council's acceptance is awaited.
