Vol. 361 No. 11

Written Answers. - Disadvantaged Areas Special Teaching Staff.

180.

asked the Minister for Education the basis on which special temporary or remedial teaching staff has been approved for primary schools in disadvantaged areas; and the reason St. Finian's, St. Oliver Plunkett or St. Brigid's national schools in Finglas did not qualify under the requirements in question.

The new arrangement for selected schools in areas of disadvantage which was introduced in the 1985-86 school year, provides for additional teaching assistance related to the school size. Decisions in regard to the schools selected for assistance were taken following consultation with my Department's inspectorate.

Having regard to the resources available it was necessary to limit the number of schools which benefitted in this way. It was not possible to include St. Finian's, St. Oliver Plunkett or St. Brigid's national schools in the list of schools selected.
