Vol. 361 No. 11

Written Answers. - Safety Standard of Toys.

42.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism in view of a recent incident where dangerous toys were found to be on sale to the public if he has any plans to introduce legislation to bring about greater control on wholesalers to prevent dangerous commodities being imported and sold in Ireland, since the IIRS has no means of preventing the sale of dangerous products to the public at present.

I have made an Order, under section 44 of the Industrial Research and Standards Act, 1961, which prohibits the manufacture, assembly or sale of children's toys unless they comply with the Irish Standard IS 165. This standard sets out maximum levels for the toxicity of surface coatings on toys and other related matters. A number of prosecutions have been taken against suppliers of unsafe goods. In many other instances suppliers have withdrawn goods where these were found to be unsafe. A fulltime safety officer has been appointed to ensure that unsafe goods are immediately withdrawn from the market.
