Vol. 361 No. 11

Written Answers. - Alcohol Advertising.

44.

asked the Minister for Industry, Trade, Commerce and Tourism if he intends to prevent the advertising of alcohol for sale at below cost price as this causes serious damage to the vintners' trade.

There are no proposals at present to prohibit the advertising of alcohol for sale at below cost. I am aware of certain concerns which have been expressed by the vintners' organisations in relation to this practice. These organisations have now approached the Examiner of Restrictive Practices about the matter. The statutory powers of the examiner include powers to investigate any aspect of the supply or distribution of goods and to recommend the holding of a public inquiry or special review of the operation of an order under section 8 of the Restrictive Practices Act, 1972. Public inquiries and special reviews of orders are held by the Restrictive Practices Commission.
