Vol. 361 No. 11

Written Answers. - Clonmel (Tipperary) School Building.

87.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will take positive steps to preserve the model school building, Western Road, Clonmel, County Tipperary, which has fallen into serious disrepair despite the fact that the building is utilised as a school and contains the offices of many Departments of State; if he is aware of its architectural, historical and environmental importance; if he will instruct the Board of Works to carry out an immediate investigation with a view to the proper maintenance and repair of the building; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Commissioners of Public Works are not the owners of the model school building, Clonmel, and for this reason their works programme in respect of the structure has been hampered.

The commissioners have been seeking for some years to purchase the property but have been inhibited by legal complications from so doing. It is now hoped that the passing of the Landlord and Tenant Act, 1984, will facilitate its acquisition which is being actively pursued with the landlord's solicitors.
