Vol. 362 No. 7

Written Answers. - Pollution Legislation.

25.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will outline his proposals if any to amend existing pollution legislation and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The adequacy of existing environmental protection legislation is kept under review in my Department. Work on the drafting of a Bill to update and extend existing legislation in relation to air pollution is well advanced. It is envisaged that the Bill will permit the full implementation of EC, legislation and will give local authorities appropriate powers to secure good air quality in their areas. Consideration is being given to the updating of the law in relation to the control and disposal of wastes with a view of bringing forward new legislation. There are no immediate proposals for the amendment of water pollution legislation.
