Vol. 362 No. 7

Written Answers. - Burial Costs.

41.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare whether any help in the form of a grant or any other payment is available to help defray the funeral expenses of a deceased person (details supplied) in County Wexford.

A death grant is payable on the death of an insured person, the wife or husband of an insured person, the widow or widower of an insured person or a child (under 18 years) of an insured person. The grant is a social insurance benefit and title to it depends on there being insurance which meets a minimum standard.

There is no record of a claim for a death grant having been received in this case and an application form on which to claim the grant has been issued to the representatives of the person concerned.

The health boards, in cases of hardship, are authorised under the supplementary welfare allowance scheme to make a single payment to meet an exceptional need including assistance towards burial costs where appropriate.
