Vol. 362 No. 9

Written Answers. - School Transport.

167.

asked the Minister for Education the reason that school transport has not been allowed for pupils attending a school (details supplied) in County Galway, despite the fact that there is room on the school bus, that assurances were given by her Department over ten years ago that all children within the catchment area would be given free transport to this school and that this situation was confirmed by a directive from the Minister for State at her Department in 1981; if, in view of these facts she will now provide permanent transport facilities to these pupils; the date on which this will be made available; and if she will make a statement on this very serious and important matter.

168.

asked the Minister for Education when free school transport will be provided for children (details supplied) in County Galway.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 167 and 168 together. The pupils referred to by the Deputies are not eligible for free school transport as they live less than one mile from the school in question.

In 1981, when it came to light that a number of pupils had been granted free transport in error, it was decided that they could retain the concession as an exceptional measure. The school authorities were informed at that time that the concession would not be extended to any other applicants who did not qualify for free transport.

In the circumstances, the pupils referred to in the questions may be granted fare-paying facilities only, subject to the conditions that spare seats are available on the school bus and that no extra State cost is involved. I understand that spare seats are available at present.
