Vol. 362 No. 9

Written Answers. - Gaming and Lotteries Act.

157.

asked the Minister for Justice when he proposes introducing legislation to amend the Gaming and Lotteries Act, 1956, and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Limerick East): As I stated in replies to question on 23 October 1985 and 27 November 1985 the Government have decided that proposals to amend the Gaming and Lotteries Act, 1956, should be prepared. Before I put any specific proposals to Government I will give careful consideration to the arguments for and against each proposal. A Supreme Court decision announced on 19 November 1985, upheld the constitutionality of section 14 of the Gaming and Lotteries, Act, 1956, which provides for the stake and prize limits for gaming in licensed amusements halls and funfairs. Following that decision representations have been made to me about the urgency of an amendment to the stake and prize limits for gaming because of the threat to employment in the gaming industry. Accordingly, I am considering the question of introducing amending legislation in this session.
