Vol. 362 No. 9

Written Answers. - Dublin “Joy Riding”.

158.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will give an outline of measures already in operation and any future plans his Department has to combat the problem of stolen cars being driven at high speed around estates in Dublin city and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Limerick East): I dealt with the subject of “joy riding” in response to a number of parliamentay questions on 5 June (Official Report 359, cols. 370 to 372). The Garda measures to which I referred in that reply are still operative and the Garda authorities are satisfied that these measures are effective in that the incidents of stolen cars being driven at high speed through estates in Dublin have substantially diminished. While this reduction cannot be quantified, it is relevant to note that the number of unauthorised takings of motor vehicles in the Dublin Metropolitan Area has decreased by about 19 per cent in the first nine months of this year, as compared with the corresponding period last year.
