Vol. 362 No. 13

Written Answers. - County Galway School Projects.

187.

asked the Minister for Education if she has sanctioned extensions and/or new schools at locations (details supplied) in County Galway; if each school project will be included in the book of estimates currently being prepared; the total amount of money allocated for each school project; when each project will start and conclude; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

In the case of school No. 1 my Department has approved in principle the provision of an extension of 1256m². A meeting will shortly be arranged between the vocational education committee's design team and officials of my Department to initiate the architectural planning of this project.

Building projects sanctioned for schools Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 6 are at present under review in accordance with the commitment given in paragraph 5.12 of the Programme for Action in Education 1984-1987. I anticipate the completion of these reviews at an early date.

My Department has approved the provision of an extension of 892m² to school No. 5. The planning of the extension has reached working drawing stage.

The allocation of funds in respect of any project does not arise until a tender has been approved. It is not possible at the present time to indicate, in respect of any of the above projects, when tenders will be approved or what commencement or completion dates will apply.

My Department has approved a new school for school No. 1. The planning procedure is at working drawing stage. Pending completion of all the planning stages it is not possible to say when this project will be released to tender.

The position regarding schools numbered 2 and 3 has not changed since my replies of 5 November 1985 and 5 December 1985 respectively.

A new extension of 620m² to school No. 4 has been approved. Documentation relating to the final tender report is awaited from the school authorities. When the report is received and found to be acceptable permission will be given to place the contract.

In the case of the first school referred to by the Deputy, my Department has requested the school authorities to lodge the local contribution towards the cost of the project. When this is done the contract will be placed and work can commence without delay. The duration of the contract is expected to be about nine months.

In the case of the second school, it is expected that the preparation of the contract documents will be completed in about two weeks' time. The question of the invitation of tenders will then be considered and a decision conveyed to the school authorities at the earliest possible date. It is not possible to say at this stage when building works in this case will commence or be completed. It is not my Department's practice to disclose the financial details of individual school projects, as these are confidential matters between my Department and the school authorities.
