Vol. 362 No. 13

Written Answers. - Water Pollution Control.

39.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will give control of environmental protection of our lakes and rivers to the Regional Fisheries Boards so as to ensure that an independent authority exists for pollution control, in view of the fact that local authorities have at present the dual role of providing infrastructural services and environmental control.

I refer the Deputy to my reply to Question No. 12 of 7 November which sets out the up to date position in relation to possible changes in existing arrangements for water pollution control. I have no proposals which would involve the transfer of responsibility in this area from the local authorities.
