Vol. 362 No. 13

Written Answers. - FEOGA Grants.

156.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will provide details of all projects in County Limerick which have been granted aid from the FEOGA section of the Common Agricultural Policy; furthermore whether any FEOGA grants which might have been sanctioned at EC level for projects in County Limerick have not been taken up; and, if so, if he can provide a full explanation as to the reason why this is the case.

I assume that the Deputy is referring to the FEOGA scheme of grants for projects relating to the processing and marketing of agricultural and fish products under Regulation (EEC) No. 355/77 and under its predecessor, Regulation (EEC) No. 17/64 which provided for grant-aiding water supply schemes also. Details of projects awarded FEOGA aid under these regulations are set out in the following table. Of the total of £568,296 awarded under Regulation (EEC) No. 17/64, £147,190 has been renounced or underclaimed due to non-implementation or non-completion of the relevant projects. The corresponding amount renounced or underclaimed under Regulation (EEC) No. 355/77 is £315,472. Any amounts renounced or underclaimed by Irish concerns are immediately reallocated to other Irish projects. A total of £1,487,873 has been paid so far under the two regulations leaving a balance of £665,444 still to be claimed. While this situation is not entirely satisfactory, it is to be borne in mind that £405,936 of this balance relates to projects approved only within the last 18 months. Approved applicants are allowed four to five years to complete their projects. It is the policy of my Department and the IDA to encourage firms to submit their claims as rapidly as possible and the take-up of funds under the scheme has improved significantly in recent years.
