The number of families at present receiving children's allowances is 473,448. The cost in 1986 is estimated at £175,000,000.
The number of families on other social welfare payments (including supplementary welfare allowance) is estimated at about 163,000 and it can be taken that the vast majority of these families are also receiving children's allowances.
