asked the Minister for Health if he is aware of allegations of irregularity in the purchase and sale of drugs used in the general medical service or hospitals; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Such allegations are always investigated when brought to the attention of the appropriate authorities. I am not aware of any evidence to suggest that irregularities are widespread. I am, however, conscious of the need to review continually the adequacy of arrangements to secure the accountability of public funds. I am considering changes in the general medical service on these grounds in the context of discussions which are going on between my Department and the professional interests concerned.
