Vol. 363 No. 7

Written Answers. - Excessive Tax Assessments.

63.

asked the Minister for Finance if he has considered the submission from the Financial Information Service Centre, in regard to the effect that excessive tax assessments have on elderly people.

I have been advised by the Revenue Commissioners that it is not the practice to raise excessive tax assessments on elderly people. Every effort is made to ensure that pensioners are required to make return of income only when such returns are absolutely necessary in order that as little disruption as possible may be caused to the elderly. If an inspector of taxes becomes aware of another source of income he will, of course, make any necessary inquiries from the recipient. This should not result in an excessive assessment.

If the Deputy will identify any case which is a cause of concern to him the matter will be investigated.
