(Limerick West) asked the Minister for Finance if he will give an estimate of the tax content in the retail price of the following food items: (a) a litre of milk; (b) 1 lb of butter; and (c) 1 loaf of bread; and if he will include in his calculations of the above (i) income tax; (ii) VAT; (ii) PRSI; (iv) levies; and (v) allowance for import duties on capital machinery (transport and other).

No indirect taxes are levied directly on the commodities concerned. I am not aware of any studies of the tax content of or the incidence of taxes on the inputs used, or the income generated, in the production of these commodities.
