Vol. 363 No. 14

Written Answers. - Potato Inspections.

71.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that potatoes are being sold in this country which are not properly branded and his Department are taking no action to prevent it; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

About 3,000 inspections are carried out each year by officers of my Department at wholesale, retail and grower premises under the provisions of the Food Standards (Potatoes) Regulations, 1977 and 1978, which specify how packages should be marked. Offenders have been prosecuted on a number of occasions under these regulations. Also, the Registration of Potato Growers and Potato Packers Act, 1984, has the objective of improving further the quality and presentation of domestic potato production.
