Vol. 365 No. 7

Written Answers. - County Galway Block Grants.

44.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he will make a special allocation to Galway County Council for the improvement of the Clifden, Roundstone road in view of the disastrous condition of this road and the heavy volume of traffic which uses the road in summer-time.

As the road in question is a regional road, primary responsibility for the planning and execution of any improvement works on it, including the timing and the provision of the necessary finance, rests with Galway County Council. The local authority may, at their discretion, use the block grant for roads to supplement expenditure from their own resources for such works. In the current year, a block grant of £1.055 million has been notified to the local authority. This represents an increase of 54 per cent on the corresponding grant in 1985.

It is not possible at this stage to allocate any additional roads grants to any local authority as the funds available in 1986 have been fully allocated.
