Vol. 366 No. 4

Written Answers. - Ministerial Travelling Expenses.

16.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will state in respect of each Minister of State in his Department, for the last year for which figures are available: the number of civilian drivers employed; the total cost of salaries paid to the drivers; the total cost of expenses paid to the drivers; and the total mileage allowance paid to the Ministers of State in respect of the use of their own car.

The information sought in relation to the financial year 1985 is as follows:

Number of civilian drivers employed

2

Total cost of salaries paid to drivers

£17,817

Total cost of expenses paid to drivers

£3,417

Total mileage allowance paid to Minister of State

£15,257

If Ministers of State had been provided with official cars and drivers in 1985, it is estimated that the cost per individual would have been £84,000. The actual cost, however, was £36,491, resulting in a saving for 1985 of £47,509.
