Vol. 366 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Intake of Medical Students.

24.

asked the Minister for Health if he has recommended a reduction in the intake of medical students; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I have not recommended a reduction in the intake of medical students but I am concerned with the present output of medical graduates and my Department have had discussions with the Department of Education about a phased incremental reduction of the intake of students into medical schools to match service requirements.

The Department have initiated an analysis of the medical manpower situation in Ireland to ensure that rational decisions may be made. Decisions can only be taken in this area after the most careful consideration because they will impact on the medical schools and also the career opportunities and income levels of health professionals.

The Department of Education together with the HEA have primary responsibility for our medical schools. Following a review undertaken by the Higher Education Authority in 1978 it was decided that a figure of 305 Irish medical students each year would meet future medical manpower needs.

The number of Irish entrants to medical schools has been reduced towards this figure over the last number of years. The number in 1983-84 was 343 and the number in 1985-86 is 322.
