Vol. 367 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Baldoyle (Dublin) Flooding.

1.

asked the Minister for the Environment if he has received a submission from Dublin County Council for a programme of works to up grade the storm water drainage system at Baldoyle in order to alleviate flooding which is very prevalent in that area every winter; if he has sanctioned the necessary funding for this programme; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

There are no proposals in my Department from Dublin County Council to relieve flooding in the Baldoyle area. However, Dublin Corporation did submit a loan application for £1.25 million to my Department in November 1984 in respect of a flood relief scheme for the Baldoyle area. The application was not accompanied by any report which could be examined or evaluated. The corporation were requested on a number of occasions to submit a detailed report setting out the problems involved at Baldoyle and their proposals to deal with them.

It was difficult to hear the Minister. Was he saying that, although an application for a report was submitted to Dublin Corporation, some necessary detail was absent so that an evaluation could not be carried out? Could he indicate what detail was absent from the application?

Just about everything. It was merely a preliminary indication of an interest on the part of the corporation and whilst they had been asked on a number of occasions, as I have said, to give the detailed information necessary for the proposal to be evaluated, they have not to date responded. The Deputy would be aware that the area has since transferred to the responsibility of another local authority and there has been no request at all from them.

A final question. Has there been any contact between the Minister's Department and Dublin County Council in relation to this problem since they took over administration of this area?

No. In the normal way, proposals are made by the local authority to the Department and are then evaluated.
