asked the Minister for the Environment the number of house improvement grant applications received from County Laois; the number of applications at present awaiting approval; and if he will consider as a matter of urgency speeding up outstanding approvals which would enable work to commence as quickly as possible, thereby generating much needed employment during the summer months.

The number of applications received under the new house improvement grants scheme in respect of dwellings in County Laois totalled 1,211 by 31 May 1986 and 723 applications had been approved in the same period. The balance would include both cases that were rejected or that are at the various stages of processing in the Department.
There is no undue delay in issuing approvals under the scheme for County Laois.
