Vol. 371 No. 6

Written Answers. - Tipperary District Court Sittings.

36.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will ensure that the District Court will continue to sit in Clogheen, County Tipperary, and that this sitting will not be transferred to the Cahir sitting.

It was decided some time ago in response to a request from Tipperary (South Riding) County Council — who are responsible in law for the maintenance of the courthouse in Clogheen — to discontinue court sittings in Clogheen and to transfer the business to Cahir. This was because of the bad condition of the courthouse, the low volume of court business in Clogheen and the excellent facilities available in Cahir.

However, in response to a subsequent request by the council, implementation of the decision was deferred pending the outcome of discussions between the county council, Clogheen community council and court staff concerning the possibility of using other premises in Clogheen in place of the courthouse there. I am awaiting the outcome of these discussions and any alternative proposals which may emerge from them.
