Vol. 371 No. 8

Written Answers. - Social Employment Scheme.

197.

asked the Minister for Labour if a limit of 200 has been placed on the number of persons who may be employed by the social employment scheme in County Kildare.

Due to the high level of demand for places on the social employment scheme it has been necessary to limit participation so as to remain within the financial allocation. This situation obtains despite the additional funds made available in the budget. The national participation level has been apportioned among eight regions of the National Manpower Service, based mainly on their share of the live register. County Kildare is part of the east region of the NMS. The east region has been allocated a quote of 2,619 man-years for 1987 of which about 240 will be available for County Kildare.

198.

asked the Minister for Labour the likely intake of workers into the social employment scheme in 1987.

Following the additional funds made available in this budget it is now possible to provide an additional 1,000 man-years of employment under the social employment scheme in 1987 bringing the total man-years figure for the year to 8,900.

This level of activity will allow an intake of about 9,500 persons.
