Vol. 372 No. 1

Written Answers. - Approval of Block Grants.

360.

asked the Minister for the Environment the total amount of grants, expressed in Irish pounds, approved by his Department for the constituency of Dublin South Central between the commencement of the recent general election campaign and the change of Government on 10 March 1987.

Generally, grants payable by my Department are paid to individuals and local authorities. In the case of the latter, the grants are normally paid in respect of the authorities' functional areas and records are not maintained on a consitutuency basis.

However, in the road grants notified to Dublin Corporation on 28 January 1987 two specific grants of £160,000 each were included for works at Watling Street and Herberton Road Bridge. Under the special amenity grants scheme, 11 grants valued at £285,000 were notified to Dublin Corporation on 9 March 1987 for projects in the Dublin South Central constituency.

The road and special amenity grants were withdrawn on 23 March pending the Government's overall expenditure review prior to the budget. The revised road grants notified on 9 April included the two grants referred to above. I am at present reviewing the applications in the Department for special amenity grants.
