Vol. 372 No. 1

Written Answers. - Local Authority Housing Costs.

560.

asked the Minister for the Environment the average all-in cost of providing a new local authority three-bedroomed house and the weekly cost to the taxpayer of the provision and the maintenance of such a dwelling.

The average estimated all in cost of providing a new local authority three-bedroomed house is approximately £32,000.

The estimated ongoing cost per week to the Exchequer to finance the capital sum of £32,000 required to provide such a dwelling is £76. The average management and maintenance costs for all rented houses amount to £11 per week which are funded by the local authority. These costs are partly offset by an average weekly rent of £7.

561.

asked the Minister for the Environment the saving to the taxpayer of housing an applicant in local authority housing in a dwelling vacated by a tenant who had availed of the £5,000 surrender grant to purchase a previously occupied private house, as against housing that applicant in a new three bedroomed local authority house.

Given the varying circumstances of the individual tenants concerned, the different loans which may be availed of, and the fluctuating interest rates and tax relief on mortgage interest, it is not possible to determine comparative costings on the basis suggested by the Deputy.
