The career break scheme is not being abandoned. Staff in the health service will continue to be entitled to career breaks as heretofore. All health agencies have been advised in relation to the filling of vacancies for specialist staff that such vacancies may be filled provided that (i) the filling of such vacancies is considered by the organisation to be essential; (ii) the organisation is on target to meet its 1987 staff reduction requirement and (iii) the post can be filled without the organisation's 1987 financial allocation being exceeded.
