Vol. 372 No. 8

Written Answers. - Garda Síochána Recruitment.

31.

asked the Minister for Justice the number of gardaí due to retire in 1987 and whether they will be replaced during the current year.

On the basis of current trends, the number of members expected to retire from the Garda Síochána in 1987 is expected to be in the region of 250. Resignations for other reasons and deaths, dismissals and possibly career breaks may reduce the force strength by a further 50 to 100 members during 1987.

As regards replacements, the position is that 76 recruit gardaí, having completed their initial training, were allocated to stations on 16 April and a further 105 recruit gardaí, who will be passing-out at the Garda Training Centre tomorrow, will be taking up duty on Friday next. In addition, 45 candidates from the last recruitment competition, to whom definite appointment commitments were made prior to the budget announcement on the proposed reduction in public service numbers, were appointed to the force yesterday and these members will become available for assignment to stations later this year. It is not proposed to provide for any further recruitment to the Garda Síochána this year.
