Vol. 372 No. 8

Written Answers. - Garda/RUC Task Force.

30.

(Limerick East) asked the Minister for Justice if he will give details of the new top-level Garda/RUC task force which is being set up following the recent meeting of the Anglo-Irish Conference held in Belfast in April 1987; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As the Deputy is aware, Garda/RUC working parties were set up following the establishment of the Inter-Governmental Conference in 1985 to carry out a series of studies of various aspects of cross-Border security co-operation. The work carried out by these working parties has been the subject of discussion at meetings of the conference and it was agreed, at the meeting held in April, that at its next regular meeting the conference will hear a detailed report on these matters and on proposals aimed at further enhancing this co-operation. This is the position as set out in the joint statement following the April meeting and, as the Deputy will be aware, it has not been the practice, since the Inter-Governmental Conference was established, to provide details regarding exchanges which take place within the framework of the conference beyond those provided in the joint statement.
