asked the Minister for Health if he will review the procedures for the storing of diaconol and palfium so that local pharmacists do not have to take more than they require for an individual patient and to allow them to withdraw only the specific amount they need and thus reduce the risk of robbery and violent attacks; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is accepted practice in the case of all controlled drugs and more particularly with synthetic opiates like those mentioned by the Deputy for pharmacists to retain minimum stocks of such drugs. Also, under the Misuse of Drugs Act, 1977, and regulations made thereunder, pharmacists are required, for security purposes, to keep controlled drugs in safe custody.
Notwithstanding these arrangements, I would like to assure the Deputy that the general availability of and control applicable to controlled drugs is kept under constant review.
