Vol. 373 No. 4

Written Answers. - National Archives.

60.

asked the Minister for Finance the progress which has been made on the preparation of documents to be deposited in the National Archives; the portion of the relevant material which has now been examined and could now be placed there; the number of staff engaged on this work; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Work on examining the Supply and Finance series of files up to the year 1934 inclusive is now completed and work is proceeding on the 1935 files. Over 20,000 files are now available for transfer to the Public Records Office when suitable space becomes available there. Approximately 4,000 files have already been sent to that office. The number of files which are being retained on grounds of sensitivity is very small — about 200 in the period in question. One officer is engaged full time on archival work.
