Vol. 373 No. 4

Written Answers. - National Archives.

77.

asked the Minister for Justice the progress which has been made on the preparation of documents to be deposited in the National Archives; the portion of the relevant material which has now been examined and could now be placed there; the number of staff engaged on this work; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I understand that the relevant regulations under the National Archives Act, 1986, have not yet been made. There are no staff available in my Department at present to undertake any work in this area in advance of the making of these regulations. However, a preliminary assessment of the work that will arise has been made and, when the regulations are made, the necessary steps will be taken.

asked the Minister for Tourism and Transport the progress which has been made on the preparation of documents to be deposited in the National Archives; the portion of the relevant material which has now been examined and could now be placed there; the number of staff engaged on this work; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As the National Archives Act, 1986, is not yet fully in force no records have recently been prepared for deposit with the National Archives. However, my Department is fully aware of the importance of maintaining records of interest to the Public Record Office and the State Paper Office. My Department will continue to co-operate with both bodies in their activities.
