Vol. 373 No. 4

Written Answers. - Farm Incomes of Islanders.

84.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the steps, if any, he has taken to improve farm incomes of smallholders residing on the Aran Islands and Inishbofin in County Galway; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The question of improving farm incomes on the Aran Islands and Inishbofin has to be looked at in the context of the overall development of the agriculture and food industry, which is a central feature of the Government's strategy for economic recovery. Policy is directed in particular towards restoring confidence and investment in the industry and increasing farm incomes in all areas.

The Aran Islands and Inishbofin are, of course, classified as more severely handicapped under the disadvantaged areas scheme and as a result qualify for substantial grants under the various EC schemes which operate in those areas.
